Physics Career Seminar Series - Tomorrow

Hi everyone,

First I want to apologize. The PGSA has been slacking on holding events the last few weeks. We have been trying to recover from visiting weekend and also break threw a wrench into things. Next Friday, however there will be an event, so keep your eyes peeled for an email.

Second I want to take this opportunity to encourage you all to go to the Physics Career Seminar. The seminar is being held tomorrow at 11:00am in 190 ESB. Refreshments will be served before hand starting at 10:30. This installment of the seminar series will be given by former graduate Dr. Sam Petuchowski, who now practices law as an Intellectual Property Attorney. Even if this doesn't seem like a path you would like to take in life, I strongly suggest you attend anyway. The speakers in this series are instructed to provide an overview of opportunities available to physics grads and in turn generally have good advise regardless of their current work. Speaking from experience I was not interested in the semiconductor industry but really enjoyed the first installment of this series.

Weekend Events

Hi Everyone,

The PGSA would like to inform you of a few events this upcoming weekend.

First as a campus wide event, on Friday (9th) and Saturday (10th) the Engineering College will host the 92nd Annual Engineering Open House. For those of you who don't know this is where people from many of the engineering departments open their doors and show you a bunch of the cool things that have been going on around campus. In addition to this many people build some really cool demos that you can't see anywhere else. If you have some time on Friday or Saturday I highly encourage to take half an hour and walk around a bit.

In addition to the open house, this Friday and Saturday is also the Physics Departments Visiting Weekend for Prospective Graduate Students. The PGSA likes to be a large part of this weekend as the visiting students really learn a lot about the program through direct contact with current students. In turn, there are several events going on that everyone is invited too.

On Friday (9th) at 5pm there will be a Pizza Dinner in the Interaction Room. A nice casual way to meet and talk to some of the visiting students. All current students are invited.

On Friday (9th) from 7:00- 9:15pm there will be a Evening Reception hosted by Prof. Alfred Hubler. The party will be at his house at 310 W. California Ave. in Urbana. All are welcome.

After Hubler's reception, in tradition with the past, the current grad students will be treating the prospectives to a night out on the town. This year the Post Faculty Get Together will be at Crane Alley in Downtown Urbana. Just think of this as a Late Night Happy Hour; ie- a chance to get drunk with the prospectives and show them a good time.

Finally on Saturday(10th) the department is hosting a brunch from 9:30 - 11:30am on the 2nd floor of the Levi Center. All are welcome to this as well.

In addition to these events, the PGSA is also looking for some volunteers for Saturday afternoon. We will be having small group sessions where prospectives can get more one on one contact with current students. For this we need a diverse group of volunteers/areas of research.
