Prospective Weekend - Friday Night Events

Hi everyone,

I hope your week is going well. I am writing you to inform you of several events being put on by the department and the PGSA this Friday (3/8) as part of the prospective grad student visiting weekend. These events are open to all current physics grad students.

5:00pm-6:30pm - Interaction Room - Pizza Dinner with prospective students.

7:00pm-9:00pm - 1703 Byrnebruk Dr., Champaign (Professor TJ Ha's House) -Faculty Reception - Directions from Loomis

9:30pm-??? - PGSA Happy Hour - Visiting Weekend Edition - Quality (110 N. Neil St, the corner of Neil and Chester in Downtown Champaign)

As Dr. Ha's house is pretty far out in Champaign, you will be responsible for your own transportation to and from the faculty party.

More importantly, we will need several drivers to volunteer to drive prospective students from Dr Ha's house to happy hour and from happy hour back to their hotel. If you volunteer for this it is important that you do not back out of this responsibility at the end of the night - i.e. you must stay sober - because we cannot leave any visiting students stranded in Champaign. That being said, the more important trip is from Dr. Ha's to downtown. (The trip from downtown can be bussed or in the past has even been walked).

If you are volunteering to drive from Dr Ha's to Quality or from Quality to the Hotel please let me know:
i) How many you can take in your car
ii) Which leg(s) of the trip
This way I can get a estimate of how much car space we will have.

I hope to see you at some or all of these events.

Zack & the PGSA

PS- We are still looking for about 5 more volunteers for the small groups on Saturday (1:30-3:30). If you haven't yet, please let me know if you are interested.

Prospective Visiting Weekend March 8th & 9th

Hi everyone,

It's that time of year again. The prospective graduate students will be visiting next weekend March 8th and 9th. The Physics Department and the PGSA need your help!

The PGSA will need some volunteers for Saturday activities. Specifically we need the following:

1-2 people:  11:45-1:30 (on the 9th)  to help out with campus tours. You don't need a real formal knowledge of the campus, as long as you can point out some important landmarks and tell interesting stories.

10-20 people: 1:30-3:30 (on the 9th) to help out with small groups. This is an opportunity to meet one on one with prospective students, answer their questions, and tell them about your experience in grad school here. You can take the students to a coffee shop, bowling, or even for ice cream if you want (All purchases will be reimbursed).

If you want to volunteer for one of these events please let me know by next wednesday. My email is dell2@illinois.edu. I will send more details to the volunteers at the end of next week.

Also please keep your eyes open next week for an email regarding Friday festivities, which will involve showing the prospectives a fun night on the town. We may need some responsible people to drive the students to and from the bars, we will let you know next week.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Zack & the PGSA
